This article is an interview conducted by Tayo, the Communications Coordinator at A2S, featuring Emmanuel Kalu-Ukpai. In this conversation, Emmanuel shares his personal journey—from navigating financial challenges and discovering A2S, to growing as a camper, scholar, and now a camp coordinator. The interview offers insight into his experiences, growth, and the impact A2S has had on his life, as well as his vision for giving back and inspiring others.
Can we meet you? Tell us about yourself.
Okay… my name, as you already know, is Emmanuel Kalu-Ukpai. I’m passionate about technology, education, and personal growth. I studied Computer Science Education, and I enjoy breaking down complex ideas and sharing knowledge in simple, engaging ways.
Outside of academics, I love playing basketball, singing, and unwinding with a good movie. I’d describe myself as a mix of focus and fun—someone who is always working to improve, but also appreciates the little things that make life enjoyable.
What was life like for you before A2S?
Before I came in contact with A2S, life felt like I was moving—but without clear direction. I had dreams, passion, and ambition, but I often found myself dealing with doubt and trying to figure everything out on my own.
Then A2S came into my life, and something changed. It was eye-opening. It instilled discipline in me and gave me a sense of belonging to something meaningful. It helped me see myself differently—not just as someone with dreams, but as someone truly capable of achieving them.
Around that time, both of my parents lost their jobs after the company they worked for was sold, and they weren’t properly compensated. This created serious financial challenges for my family. After finishing secondary school, I started working to help support us and ease the burden at home. That experience taught me responsibility, resilience, and the value of hard work.
I began working at 19 in a shop that sold clothing materials. I worked there for a few years and eventually quit about a year before gaining admission into the university. With the little I had saved, I was able to pay my acceptance fee and my first-year tuition. From my second year onward, A2S took over the payment of my fees.
Can you share specific experiences that made you feel this way?
There was a time I was deeply worried about how I would sponsor myself through university. I was constantly calculating, planning, and trying to figure out how I could carry such a huge responsibility on my own. It felt heavy—and at times, overwhelming.
But when I came in contact with A2S and later received the scholarship, something shifted in me. It wasn’t just about the financial relief; it was the realization that I didn’t have to fight every battle alone. My mindset changed—from survival mode to growth mode.
How did you hear about A2S?
Well… I first heard about A2S when I started playing basketball in 2016. At the time, it wasn’t a full-time commitment because I was working and only had one day off for practice.
I kept hearing people talk about “Access to Success Camp, Access to Success Camp,” and I kept wondering, “Who or what is Access to Success?” At some point, I even convinced myself it had something to do with Access Bank 😂. That was my assumption—until I finally attended my first BEC in 2018.
Share your A2S journey—life as a camper and a scholar.
My journey with A2S has been nothing short of life-changing.
I started as a camper from 2018 to 2022. Those years were filled with learning, exploration, and growth. As a camper, I discovered my love for community, discipline, and pushing beyond my comfort zone. Every session, activity, and connection planted seeds that would later shape who I am.
In 2022, I became a scholar and continued in that role until 2025. Transitioning from camper to scholar wasn’t just about a title—it marked a shift in responsibility, focus, and mindset. As a scholar, I experienced the true depth of support, challenge, and belief that A2S offers. I grew not only academically, but personally. I developed resilience, confidence, and a deeper appreciation for being part of a community that genuinely invests in people.
Now you’re coordinating the camp. That’s a big deal—how does that make you feel?
Sometimes I just sit and think, “Wow… dreams really do come true.” 🥲
It feels surreal. I remember sitting on the bleachers, watching everything unfold, and thinking, “I want to be part of this someday.” And now, that day is here.
I truly count it as a blessing, and I’m deeply grateful—to God and to A2S—for this opportunity.
What are your expectations, and how do you intend to use this opportunity?
I expect to grow—not just as a leader, but as someone who can truly inspire and guide others. I’m looking forward to learning more about team management, mentorship, and how to create environments where people can thrive, both on and off the court.
I intend to use this opportunity to make a meaningful impact. I want to develop programs and initiatives that promote discipline, teamwork, and personal growth. Beyond organizing activities, I hope to mentor, motivate, and support others in reaching their full potential—just as A2S has done for me.
This role isn’t just a title; it’s a platform to give back, lead by example, and help others believe in themselves.
The camp is in 2 weeks! Nervous? Excited? Or a mix of both?
If mixed feelings were a pool… I’m definitely swimming in it 😂😂
