Dear Friends,

On behalf of my family and my amazing staff, thank you for joining us for such a meaningful evening together at Soulful Supper.

As you continue to reflect on the stories and ideas shared from this year’s Soulful Supper, we hope you keep the key theme close at heart: unlocking potential.

Again and again, we were reminded that potential is often already present—it simply needs someone willing to see it, believe in it, and create the conditions for it to flourish.

Dr. Ken Menkhaus began by helping us zoom out and consider why investing in people—particularly young people in Africa—matters so deeply at this moment in history. Drawing on his decades of studying conflict, governance, and development around the world, Ken challenged us to look at Africa not simply through the lens of need, poverty, or problems to be solved, but through the lens of opportunity and human potential.

We were reminded that the future of development is not simply about delivering aid. It is about investing in people. Young people are one of the world’s greatest untapped resources, and lasting transformation requires long-term investment in their education, character, leadership, relationships, and opportunity. Faith and ethical leadership matter. Communities matter. And when we invest in people over time, the impact can extend across generations.

In that larger story, A2S is modeling an approach to development that is thoughtful, relational, and built for lasting impact—one that seeks not merely to meet a need today, but to help create the conditions for people and communities to flourish tomorrow.

Ifeanyi “Iffy” Ufochukwu then brought that idea to life through his own story. Growing up in Nigeria, Iffy never imagined that basketball would shape his future. He initially had no interest in the game at all. But at an A2S camp, Andrew Lovedale saw something in him that Iffy could not yet see in himself. A pair of basketball shoes, an invitation to play, and a community that believed in him helped unlock something much bigger: confidence, discipline, purpose, and a vision for what his life could become.

Iffy reminded us that basketball didn’t create his potential. It helped unlock it. His journey from Nigeria to Rice University and ultimately Duke is a powerful picture of what can happen when someone is given an opportunity and surrounded by people who believe in them.

His story also reminded us that there are countless young people who may be standing at the beginning of their own stories—full of talent, intelligence, and possibility, but perhaps not yet able to see what is possible for their lives. Sometimes, all it takes is someone willing to say, “Why not you?”

Finally, our new Development Director, Bill Satterwhite, invited us to think about what it means to participate personally in this work through the way we view and steward our resources.

Bill reminded us that money is currency—it is designed to move. He shared about his own journey from thinking of money as “my money” to understanding it as something entrusted to him by God. Through stories of giving generously—even when it seemed there was little to give—and seeing those gifts multiply in ways he could never have anticipated, we were challenged to embrace an abundance mindset.

That perspective reflects the evolution of A2S itself: from generosity—simply meeting immediate needs—to justice—creating an ecosystem where young people have the relationships, resources, opportunities, and support they need to flourish.

These three perspectives offer a singular invitation: Unlock potential.

Consider what God has already placed inside a young person, then put the resources God has entrusted to you into motion by creating the conditions to help others flourish.

Our hope is that last night inspired something within you, and now, we invite you into the work.

Because when we invest in people, the impact rarely stops with one person. A life changed can become a family changed. A family can become a community. A community can help shape generations.
